Feature Article Writer’s Guidelines

Feature articles for Around Town should run between 850-1000 words. Our readers expect a lively but simple writing style. Features are typically “chunked” into three or four shorter segments, each with its own descriptive headline. Quotations, especially from local people, are very helpful in establishing a local angle and giving the article a personal touch. Remember also that Around Town is a magazine for active people, and our goal is to encourage community involvement and healthy, rewarding lifestyles. Feature articles should focus getting readers interested and involved in an activity. We like to provide information (phone numbers, Web site URLs, etc.) for services and programs our readers could use.

Please include two or three visuals to accompany your article. These may be photographs, charts, diagrams, or drawings. They should capture the eye and illustrate the more dynamic or colorful aspects of your subject. DO NOT submit visuals that are copyrighted by someone else, unless you have permission to use them. Public domain images are preferred. Provide appropriate captions (one or two sentences) for each visual.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that all quotes and information from outside sources be properly credited. To avoid potentially embarrassing situations for our company, please use common sense when citing or paraphrasing others.
