Regional Amateur Astronomy Club Hosts All-Night Perseid Meteor Viewing
Riverside Park
August 11 and 12
9 p.m. - dawn
Local astronomy buffs and anyone interested in viewing this years Perseid meteor shower is invited to a Shooting Star Party at Riverside Park. After the success of last years August 9th Perseids party, the RAAC has expanded this years party to cover two nights, August 11 and 12. This years Perseids are expected to peak on these two nights, with some experts predicting as many as one hundred meteors per hour. Admission is free and the general public is welcome to attend.
Club members will have telescopes available for viewing the moon early in the evening, as well as Saturn and Jupiter, the Orion Nebula, and other deep-sky objects of interest. Astronomy experts will be on hand to answer questions. Skywatchers should bring chairs or blankets to sit on, a sweater or jacket, and a flashlight (a red lens cover is a great help). Skies in August are generally clear, but we do advise people to check the local weather forecast before setting out.
To reach the park, take Highway 9 East 13 miles past the city limits. Turn left on Old Settlers Road. The park entrance is one mile down on the right. Gates will open at 9 p.m.
