Pedestrian Safety: A Cost-Benefit Analysis and Report |
|
I am writing because a friend of mine recently suffered a terrible accident. She and her daughter were in their car leaving our preschool, the Play Zone, on Manchaca Rd., and were hit by a speeding car. They had to go to the hospital, but luckily they were not badly injured. All of us with children in the Play Zone have been waiting for something like this to happen, and now it has. We do not want it to happen again. Manchaca is especially dangerous at this point because it intersects with another street, called Prather. People speed on Manchaca all the time, and anyone trying to pull into the street, from a driveway or from Prather, is in danger.
What is more, there is a crosswalk at this intersection that many of us use to cross Manchaca. You have to cross over to reach the southbound bus stop. No one ever stops to let pedestrians cross here. I have seen people wait forever for a break in the traffic, but no one ever stops as they are required to do by law. I worry even more about the senior citizens from the senior activity center next to our school. They have a terrible time crossing the road to get to the bus stop. I have spoken to some of them and they agree that something needs to be done. They told me an elderly gentleman was almost killed at this intersection last year!
I sincerely hope you will take action to have a traffic signal installed at this intersection. If we don't do so, it is only a matter of time before an even worse accident happens.
Sincerely,
Donella Peterson
