Pedestrian Safety: A Cost-Benefit Analysis and Report |
|
A number of parents and students at Washington Junior High have asked me to contact you about the situation on Manchaca Road near our school. There have been several instances in the past year where students attempting to get to school narrowly missed being hit by cars. Traffic on Manchaca is particularly heavy in the mornings, and even with the 20 m.p.h. zone, it is very hard to cross the street because drivers simply do not yield to pedestrians. Our students and their parents have expressed serious concern over this situation. We would like to ask that your office investigate the situation and see what could be done to reduce the danger. One suggestion that several parents have mentioned would be a tunnel under the road, or a pedestrian bridge. These options would not disrupt the flow of traffic on Manchaca but would allow students to cross safely regardless of traffic levels.
I think you will agree that the safety of our children is of paramount importance. Our whole school hopes we can work to find a solution to this problem. Please feel free to contact me if we can be of any help. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Chris Dugas
Principal, Washington Junior High School
