In each of the questions below determine whether a comma or a semicolon is appropriate.

Nearly fifteen percent of the population may be left-handed ___1__ (; semicolon / , comma) nevertheless, we live in a largely right-handed society. A child beginning school may already prefer one hand or the other; if the preferred hand is the left __2__ (; semicolon / , comma) it's better for the teacher not to try to change that preference.
