Paragraph Practice 4

In each of the questions below determine whether a comma or a semicolon is appropriate.

We make maps to establish our perception of the world geographically; in other words __1__ (; semicolon / , comma) we want to give ourselves the security of knowing where we are located and what surrounds us. Our ancestors probably made maps before they established any other form of written communication; dating old maps __2__ (; semicolon / , comma) however, is a difficult task. Many of the world's oldest maps come to us from the ruins of Mesopotamia __3__ (; semicolon / , comma) for example, the earliest Babylonian clay tablet depicts a map of the ancient city of Nippur.
