Paragraph Practice 5

In the following questions, choose the correct word that completes the corresponding space in the paragraph below.

At first, mad cow disease seemed almost comical---most people think of cows as such quiet, docile creatures that the idea of a "mad cow" was simply ridiculous. But when people ____1____ (who/whom) had eaten British beef became ill, no one was laughing anymore. The disease caused the brains of those ____2____ (who/whom) it afflicted to deteriorate and fill with holes, and the victims quickly lost physical and mental abilities. Soon, they died. At first, the British government claimed that the problem was under control, and in the first few years after the disease was discovered, only about two dozen people had died. By 2000, however, the number of human deaths was nearing a hundred. Perhaps the most frightening news is that mad cow disease has a long incubation period: ____3____ (whoever/whomever) ate tainted meat between 1980 and 1990 might still become sick in the years ahead.
