Examples

Follow the steps in each example to determine how the acronym can be pluralized or mode possessive to correctly complete the sentence.

  1. Global positioning systems, or (GPSs/GPS's/GPSs'), came down in price during the past decade.

    Step 1. A plural form is needed.
    Step 2. Use GPSs (add s to the base form).

  2. Now (GPSs/GPS's/GPSs') are used by campers, hunters, and other recreational users.

    Step 1. A plural form is needed.
    Step 2. Use GPSs (add s to the base form).

  3. The (GPSs/GPS's/GPSs') ability to convey distance and terrain has recently found another application.

    Step 1. A singular possessive form is needed.
    Step 2. Use GPS's (add 's to the base form).

  4. Now golf carts at some expensive courses will come equipped with (GPSs/GPS's/GPSs').

    Step 1. A plural form is needed.
    Step 2. Use GPSs (add s to the base form).

  5. (GPSs/GPS's/GPSs') margins of error differ; in this case, the golf cart will also come equipped with a compass.

    Step 1. A plural possessive form is needed.
    Step 2. Use GPSs' (add s' to the base form).
