After reading Chapter 3 in the textbook, you should be able to:

  1. discuss California’s historical development from to 1542 to statehood,
  2. describe the influence of Mexico on California’s historical culture,
  3. discuss the impact of the Gold Rush and the Compromise of 1850 and its role in the process of statehood,
  4. discuss the purpose and legacy of the Progressive Movement and the development of direct democracy,
  5. describe California’s Twentieth century, and
  6. discuss California’s constitution and the purpose of initiative, referendum, and recall.
