Chapter 2 encourages you to explore the concept of generations, understood both as biological generations, which come along every twenty years, and as historical generations, which are the common experiences and common histories that people have growing up with others their age. On the assumption that every generation is "in part a media event," this Companion Website provides an opportunity for you to engage further in debates and cultural phenomena related to generations. It uses the Internet as a means to explore the concept of generations and generational conflict. The first "Checking Out the Web" activity is an examination of the continuing aftermath of 9/11 in popular culture. The second activity focuses on the many uses of the Internet and how use of the Internet may differ along generational lines. The third activity involves areas of contestation in culture (tattoos, drugs, music, even language itself) that provide major sites of generational disagreement. The "Visual Culture" section provides links to the study of generations through advertising and "Mining the Archives" provides links to additional forms of cultural expression, including, music, children's books and games.
