Chapter 7 explores the cultural functions of storytelling, a universal popular form of entertainment, and education. It examines the occasions on which people tell stories and how (and why) these stories are told. Chapter 7 also investigates who tells stories and the different types of storytelling. The Companion Website focuses heavily on a particular form of storytelling—urban legends—and the ways the Internet is changing how and which urban legends are being told. The first "Checking Out the Web" activity tests your repertoire of urban legends and asks you to think about how urban legends are modified as they're told and the variations you might have heard. The second activity involves the differences between older and more traditional urban legends and the urban legends that circulate on the Web. The third activity examines how urban legends are referenced in recent horror and sci-fi movies. The fourth activity explores a different form of storytelling, popular TV series. The "Visual Culture" section picks up on some themes in the textbook and provides links to cartoons and comics. Finally, the "Mining the Archives" section provides links to sites that bring personal and local storytelling to the Internet audience.
