Chapter Overview

Chapter 8 of Reading Culture introduces various selections regarding the all-important but hard-to-understand subject of work. As you go through the chapter, you will read about some of the cultural, social, and economic implications of work. Throughout the chapter, you are also encouraged to write about your own knowledge of and experience with work.

This Companion Website contains activities and readings that extend the selections in the book. The first "Checking Out the Web" activity takes you into the world of workplace humor. The second involves ongoing debates regarding the federal minimum wage, and the third explores workplace implications of the dot.com economy. "Visual Culture" provides links to historic images of work, including child labor. Finally, in "Mining the Archives," you will delve into additional archival material for perspectives on the controversies surrounding sweatshops.
