Chapter 3: Schooling |
|
Chapter 3 of Reading Culture encourages a close examination of the social function of education and of everyday practices in education, especially those of the "hidden curriculum," and asks you to identify the ways in which you, as a student, a learner, and a person, have been affected by school.
The three Web Exercises allow you to investigate the issues of alternative forums of education, plagiarism, and gendered learning. The Wired Culture activity discusses more broadly the topic of information design and communications. The Film Clip activity asks you to critically analyze one of your favorite films. Visual Culture Online offers links to historical images of schooling and current images of one-room schoolhouses. Finally, Mining the Web offers you an opportunity to explore the history of textbooks.
