Chapter Overview

Chapter 5 of Reading Culture discusses America's style-conscious culture and the cultural codes related to the personal choices we make as consumers. This is important, because the styles we follow and the products we use tell others about who we are. They help shape our identities and how we want others to know us.

The exercises in this Companion Website continue with the theme of style as a means of identification. The Web Exercises explore the cultural significance of styles, costumes, and branding. The Wired Culture exercise explores the iPod and communication, while the Film Clip exercise looks in-depth at costumes used in film. Visual Culture Online explores the social construction of beautiful faces, and Mining the Web investigates racial branding.
