Chapter Overview

Chapter 10 of Reading Culturefocuses on investigation culture from a postcolonial perspective. The chapter looks at the way Western powers have and continue to represent "others," that is, those who are different from us, either as needing our "help" or as exotic others. The chapter also investigates the ways in which formerly colonized people look at the West and their relationship to it.

This Companion Website continues to explore the postcolonial themes of the chapter. The Web exercises investigate the postcolonial classroom, language use, and world music. The Wired Culture exercise looks at political organizations, and the Film Clip explores Bollywood. Visual Culture Online offers links to study postcolonial representation, and finally, Mining the Web explores nineteenth-century Orientalist painting.
