Critical Thinking Questions

Oxfam America offers a fresh perspective on the issues affecting people living in the global South. You, the readers, are mostly college students in the North, primarily in the United States. Did Oxfam’s perspective change your views, reinforce your views, or did you find Oxfam’s approach off-target? Did this section make you more or less likely to engage with the lives of people living far away and in very different conditions and cultures from your own? What lessons can you draw from Oxfam’s experiences that might enhance your understanding of the topics in this textbook, such as conflict (Chapter 5), trade (Chapter 8), and especially international development (Chapter 13)?

Whether through Oxfam’s approach or another way, we hope that you as students in the global North will see the global South as part of your community, as among your problems and opportunities, and as an integral part of your life. We authors are trying to do the same: For 15 years we have donated more than 5 percent of the royalties from this book to Oxfam America. The important thing, however, is not the particular actions you take or contributions you make—humanitarian, political, career, volunteer—but that you see the whole world and not just your corner of it as the context for your life. Think globally!

The following critical thinking questions connect the Oxfam section to the subject of International Relations as discussed elsewhere in this book.
