Chapter Objectives

On September 11, 2001, the American consciousness was forever changed by a morning of unthinkable terrorism. Almost every nation lost a citizen that day. For Americans, the fact that the attacks happened on American soil shook the foundations of national security. Violent conflicts that seemed far away and removed from daily life suddenly seemed dangerously close. That Tuesday redefined the way in which we viewed our place in the world, and reminded us about what really is important. It also created heroes. This chapter presents different perspectives on issues connected to the events of September 11. As you read the articles included in this chapters, explore the following ideas and questions:

  • What does America symbolize to its citizens? To the people of other countries? Did the events of September 11 affect this? How?
  • What affect did the attacks of September 11 have on American’s sense of community?
  • What is "patriotism"? What does it mean to be patriotic?
  • What messages are conveyed by the American flag? How do people feel about the flag?
  • What is terrorism? How do we address the threat of terrorism without compromising our freedoms and liberties?
