Vocabulary List for College Writers
Ask students to add the word invention to their vocabulary lists.

Invention: the task of generating ideas. Invention is the process of tapping into knowledge and experiences, rediscovering them, so to speak, by making connections between these ideas and a particular topic, and by seeing these ideas as possible subjects for writing.

Class Activity
Connect the idea of invention to the activities students do in other classes by asking students to describe situations in which they make decisions about their own work. For example, in business class, students may be asked to identify a subject for a group project; in history class, students may need to develop a paper topic; in psychology class, students may need to choose a research study to participate in. Connect these examples to the practice of invention as a method of decision-making. Encourage students to use invention in this course and in other courses.
