This series of skills-based textbooks, written by D.J. Henry of Daytona Beach Community College, features plentiful opportunities for students to practice individual and combined reading skills on high-interest passages from both textbooks and popular sources. Basic reading comprehension and vocabulary skills are addressed, and critical reading skills are introduced in careful step-by-step fashion.

The Henry series focuses students’ attention on how their skills apply to reading college textbooks. The books also emphasize the importance of visuals, in addition to text, as valuable sources of information. Students are asked to respond to visuals throughout the series in Visual Vocabulary features. The Lab Manual, whose print component is bound into the back of the book, offers 52 activities designed to provide additional practice and enrichment for all the topics in each book. Students begin their Lab Activities in the book and then can finish them in the Lab Manual Online. Thus students are guided to incorporate technology as a learning tool and become more familiar with reading on the Web.
