Don Your Thinking Hats

      1Critical-thinking pioneer Edward de Bono suggests that in analyzing problems, you use six "thinking hats" as a way of seeking different perspectives or views. 2With each hat, you look at the problem from a different angle.

  • 3The fact hat focuses attention on the facts and figures that bear on the problem. 4For example, think about how to budget money to balance wants and needs as you solve any problems with your personal finances.
  • 5The feeling hat focuses attention on the emotional responses to the problems. 6How does saving money make you feel? 7How does spending money make you feel? 8What about money and budgets makes you nervous?
  • 9The negative argument hat asks you to become the devil's advocate. 10How would your finances be affected if you continue to spend without a budget?
  • 11The positive benefits hat asks you to look at the upside. 12How would your finances be affected if you did budget and save?
  • 13The creative new idea hat focuses on new ways of looking at problems. 14In what other ways can financial problems be addressed? 15What are other possible solutions?
  • 16The control of thinking hat helps you analyze what you're doing; it asks you to reflect on your own thinking. 17Have you made an effort to budget and save? 18Have you clearly defined your problem?
