Integration in Sports

     16On April 18, 1946, the sports world focused on a baseball field in Jersey City, New Jersey, an industrial wasteland on the banks of the Passaic River. 17It was the opening day for the Jersey City Giants of the International League. 18Their opponents were the Montreal Royals. 19Playing second base for the Royals was Jackie Roosevelt Robinson. 20He was a pigeon-toed, highly competitive, marvelously talented African American athlete. 21The stadium was filled with curious, excited spectators, and in the press box, sportswriters from all over fidgeted with their typewriters. 22It was not just another season-opening game. 23Professional baseball, America's national game, was about to be integrated.
