Chapter 6: Review Test 5

Transition Words and Thought Patterns

Read the following paragraph from a college psychology textbook. Transition words are highlighted in bold type. Identify the type of transition for each of these words, and then answer the final question.

Preventing Problems

1The goal of preventing psychological problems can be realized at several different points. 2The first point, primary prevention, seeks to put a stop to a condition before it begins. 3Steps might be taken, for example, to teach people healthy coping skills. 4At the same time, primary prevention may also seek to change the situations that lead to mental problems such as anxiety or depression. 5Next is secondary prevention. 6In secondary prevention, attempts are made to limit the length and difficulty of a disorder once it has begun. 7Programs that allow for early identification and prompt treatment of problems help achieve this goal. 8Finally, tertiary prevention limits the longterm impact of a psychological disorder by seeking to avoid a relapse. 9During this approach, steps are taken to identify the causes of the disorder and, as much as possible, get rid of them.
