Chapter 4: Supporting Details Lab Activity 17: Major and Minor Details |
Objective To determine the major and minor details that support a topic and main idea.
The term morphology refers to the body's external appearance. Research on the possible relationship between three extreme body types and criminality first began to appear in the early decades of the twentieth century. First, endomorphy refers to persons who are extremely rotund (fat) and nonmuscular. Second, mesomorphy refers to persons who are unusually muscular in their body build, and to date, all studies have reported significant tendencies for delinquents and criminals to be more mesomorphic than persons in general. The third body type ectomorphy denotes persons who are very skinny and nonmuscular. Many college students in these studies tend to be more ectomorphic than the general adult population. Finally, in the middle of these three extremes, are persons who are said to have a balanced body type, which includes the majority of people. To illustrate the types of findings that have been consistently reported, one of the most famous body type studies found that, whereas 31 percent of nondeliquents were mesmorphic, 60 percent of the delinquents were.
