The Bodacious Boidae Family

1Boa is the common name for the Boidae family of snakes, which is made up of 50 species. 2Most of these constrictor snakes bear their young live. 3Nonpoisonous, a boa feeds by grabbing its prey with its teeth, quickly coiling around it with its strong body, squeezing it until it suffocates, and swallowing it whole. 4Unlike other snakes, the boa has two functional lungs, instead of one, and small hind limbs with claws. 5The best known boa is the boa constrictor, which has been known to grow to over 18 feet long. 6One of the largest of the boas is the anaconda, which can grow up to 25 feet in length and 3 feet in thickness. 7The anaconda lives in swamps and the shallow parts of rivers in South America, preying on animals as they come to drink. 8The python, which is also a nonvenomous constrictor, is another noteworthy member of the Boidae family. 9Like boas, the muscular python squeezes its prey to death, and it possesses the same hind limbs with claws reminiscent of its lizard ancestry. 10However, unlike the boa constrictors, the python reproduces by laying eggs around which the female coils herself for the six- to eight-week incubation period. 11The reticulated python of Southeast Asia is one of the world's largest snakes, reaching lengths of over 30 feet and weighing as much as 300 pounds. 12The snakes within the Boidae family are remarkable for their variety, strength, and size.
