¹The ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was the point where earth intersected with divine eternity. ²Kings, dignitaries, and pilgrims journeyed to its sacred grounds to seek advice from the gods through the Oracle. ³Located 180 km from Athens, Greece, the remaining ruins still speak of the grandeur of ancient Greece. ⁴Isolated in a wilderness of mountains and valleys, Delphi is a massive sanctuary. ⁵On the southwest side sits a complex of ruins and artifacts including the Temple of Apollo, the son of the great god Zeus, surrounded by treasuries and monuments. ⁶Close by are three soaring arches that stand as magnificent skeletons of the Oracle where the priestess Pythia delivered her edicts from the gods. ⁷An amphitheater carved out of the northwestern section of the sanctuary still stands as evidence of the cultural importance of theater in Greek culture. ⁸Further up the slope of the cliff sits the massive Stadium used for chariot races. ⁹And further west are the Gymnasium and Palaistra that were used for the training of athletes. ¹⁰Delphi was a holy place that honored the body, intellect, and soul of humanity.
