Chapter 6: Supporting Details Lab Activity 29: Outlines |
|
|
Objective To outline major and minor details that support the main idea. Step 2: Read the following, and then answer the questions that follow. Then return to the Lab Manual to answer question 10. 1Many citizens have concerns about Photo Red and are reluctant to allow the technology in their city. 2For one, they worry that they will be punished if someone else is driving their car when the vehicle is photographed. 3However, if a motorist signs an affidavit that attests that a friend or relative was driving the car, then the ticket will go to that driver. 4Another concern is that the presence of a camera is allowing "Big Brother" into their lives and will be an infringement of their privacy and civil rights.5In California, for example, the camera actually photographs the driver's face as well as the license plate. 6However, proponents of the technology argue that driving is a privilege, and other motorists have the right to be safe on the roads. 7The technology, they argue, is there to ensure the rights of the citizens, not to take it away. 8A final concern is that the cost of the technology will require an increase in citizens' taxes, but the cost is minimal. 9In Virginia Beach, Virginia, for instance, the cost for one year is paid for in the fines incurred by 3.5 tickets a day. 10Currently, they are issuing 16 tickets a day at one Photo Red intersection, which is more than enough to cover the expense. Main Idea: Many citizens have concerns about Photo Red and are reluctant allow the technology in their city. Copyright © 1995-2008 by Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Pearson Longman.
