Some experts believe that over one million Americans use steroids. The desire to perform better in athletic competition is the main reason so many people use steroids. Steroids can increase muscle size and weight gain. The power of these drugs can be seen in the physical changes they cause in the human body. Changes in the male body are often unwanted. For example, men who use steroids may grow breasts. Their testicles may become smaller. And their sperm count may decrease. Changes in the female body may also be unwanted.
Women may develop a deeper voice. They may grow more body and facial hair. Their breasts may shrink. Their menstrual cycle may become irregular. Some unwanted changes affect both males and females. Both men and women may develop acne, mood swings, and weight gain. Both may experience hair loss, upset stomachs, and trouble urinating.
