Overcoming Test Anxiety

     Overcoming test anxiety is the result of focusing on what you know and relaxing. As soon as you have permission to begin and before you look at the test, write down all the information you are afraid you might forget, such as formulas and special terms; writing down this information results in less anxiety. After you write down important information, skimming the test and answering the easy questions first lead to self-confidence and build points based on what you know. Finally, taking a few deep, even breaths and tensing and relaxing your major muscles can result in a sense of calm that lets you focus on what you do know.

Sexual Abuse

     Apart from the obvious effects, sexual abuse subtly affects the lifelong behavior of the abused child. One subtle effect is the lifetime struggle to learn how to trust others. Many times, the offender is someone the child knows and trusts. Sexual abuse violates this trust in the most dreadful way. Thus distrust takes root early. Shame and fear on the part of the victim often keep the child silent about the abuse, and this silence may lead to repeated attacks by the abuser. Therefore, the distrust becomes deeply rooted and shoots off into other parts of the victim's life. Long-term results may include a distrust of oneself, the opposite sex, and authority figures.

Rising Above Trouble

     There are those among us who have faced and overcome terrible tragedies or horrible difficulties. These "overcomers" rise above their situations for a number of reasons. One reason they overcome is that they look for the good in the bad. They remain sure that a lesson can be learned from the worst of circumstances. Second, they overcome because they use the lessons they learn to help others. Because they are determined to reject bitterness, they look for ways to share their hard-earned wisdom with others who may be facing similar difficulties. Finally, these remarkable people usually rely on a deep faith in a higher power. They trust that even in suffering, there is a purpose. Their trust and faith lead them to seek both the lessons in pain and the opportunities to help others.
