Chapter 11: Mastery Test 8

Read the passage; then answer the questions that follow it.

1Two students enter a classroom. 2The first student, Philip, pauses just inside the doorway with a piece of paper in his hand. 3He looks around, looks at the paper, and looks around again with a puzzled frown. 4He repeats this action a few times. 5Then, without speaking to anyone, he quickly takes a seat in the back of the room near the door. 6He does not have any books, but he does have a pen and a notepad. 7He fidgets in his seat as he waits for class to begin. 8The second student, Clara, walks with assurance to take a seat in the front row. 9As she chats with the people around her, she unzips her backpack and pulls out the textbook College Math, a notebook, and a tape recorder. 10Then she settles into her seat, opens her textbook to the current assignment, and pulls out her homework.

11The teacher enters the room. 12As he takes the attendance, he introduces Philip to the rest of the class. 13The teacher also takes time to tell Philip where to purchase the textbook for the course. 14After class, Clara introduces herself to Philip and offers to show him how to get to the bookstore.
