Identifying the Topic Sentence

Identify the topic sentence in each paragraph. One paragraph has two topic sentences: one at the beginning and one at the end.


		1. ¹Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are passed from one person to another by sexual contact. ²STDs are caused by germs such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. ³Antibiotics, like penicillin, often cure STDs caused by bacteria and fungi. ⁴For example, syphilis and gonorrhea are both curable if treated in time with antibiotics. ⁵However, many STDs caused by viruses cannot be cured. ⁶For example, there is currently no cure for genital herpes. 		2. ¹Today, some people may think of wrestling as more of a staged circus act than a real sport. ²However, this has not always been the case. ³Wrestling has a long and proud history. ⁴Early man may have wrestled with animals for survival. ⁵Because it requires strength and flexibility, wrestling became part of the first Olympic Games held in Greece 3,000 years ago. ⁶Wrestling has attracted people of courage and leadership. ⁷For example, George Washington, the first president of the United States, was a leading wrestler in the Virginia colony. 		3. ¹Few of us could swim in the ocean comfortably after seeing filmmaker Steven Spielberg's terrifying movie Jaws. ²In his hit movie E.T. the Extra- Terrestrial, Spielberg created a sweet, funny film about a being from outer space. ³In 1985, he gave us The Color Purple, a moving picture about a black family in the South that earned him a Best Director nomination. ⁴Steven Spielberg has created some of the most successful and popular films of the 1970s and 1980s. 		4. ¹Although many women have worked for equality, few have become well known for their success. ²Four women, however, are widely recognized for their work in the cause of equal treatment for everyone. ³Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) started a women's antislavery society. ⁴She also organized the first women's rights convention. ⁵Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) bravely spoke out for freedom and independence for both blacks and women. ⁶Finally, Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) and Lucy Stone (1818-1893) began the fight for women's right to vote. ⁷Each of these women worked hard for the rights of others.
