      10.      1The Roman emperor Nero (A.D. 54-68) demanded that he be worshiped as a god. 2Stating a belief in Jesus as God became a crime against the state. 3Under Nero's rule, a Christian could be pardoned if he or she would burn incense to a Roman god. 4Many Christians refused to do so; Nero put them into prison and tortured them. 5Some Christians were nailed to poles, covered with pitch, and set afire; they became human torches that lighted Nero's courtyard.
