1Shortly before 8 A.M. on December 7, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. 2By that night, the FBI had taken hundreds of Japanese Americans into custody to be questioned. 3During 1942, over 100,000 people of Japanese origin were taken from their homes and placed in relocation centers. 4Some of these were the first of their families to live in the United States, and they were aliens, not citizens; others were their children who had been born in the United States and were citizens. 5These citizens were called "non-aliens." 6None of these people were ever accused of any war crimes. 7Yet most of them lost their jobs and homes. 8The relocation centers were crowded and dirty and offered no privacy. 9They were guarded by armed forces. 10Barbedwire fencing was strung around the camps to prevent escapes. 11Some Japanese Americans spent as long as three years in these detention centers.
1Most people think that painkillers prescribed by doctors and sold at drugstores are safe because they are legal. 2For example, drugs like Lortab and OxyContin are superior painkillers for fighting migraine headaches. 3Xanax is a powerful drug that eases anxiety. 4These drugs do make life much easier for many people; however, many of these same people slowly become addicted. 5In fact, the addiction can become so strong that a large number of abusers of these drugs lie and steal to feed their habits. 6Mothers, teenagers, lawyers, and executives have all been known to phone in fake prescriptions or visit several doctors to get multiple prescriptions for the same drug.
