Hunger Cues

1Hunger can be triggered by both physical and mental cues. 2First, physical hunger is a natural survival instinct that doesn't have to be learned. 3When the body is hungry, the brain sounds the alarm. 4The body turns food into glucose, also known as blood sugar. 5When the level of blood sugar drops, the brain sends a signal to the nervous system, so the stomach growls, a feeling of hunger develops, and thoughts about food direct the decision to eat. 6In addition to physical cues, mental cues trigger the desire to eat. 7Mental cues are triggered by the senses of sight, smell, and taste. 8Seeing a piece of pumpkin pie may trigger the desire to eat it even if the body is not hungry. 9The aroma of freshly baked bread makes the mouth water at the memory of its buttery taste and flaky texture. 10Mental hunger is a learned or conditioned behavior.
