About the Author

Born in New York City, Toni Cade Bambara (1939-1995), pursued various types of work before devoting herself to writing. She studied in the U.S., Italy, and France and then, among other things, worked as a social investigator, served at the Venice Ministry of Museums in Italy, and was a free-lance writer. Particularly fond of the genre of the short story, Bambara writes about black people, for the most part black women, focusing on "the caring that lies beneath the antagonisms between black men and black women." "A Girl's Story" is a story about coming-of-age.
