About the Author

Before teaching writing at the university level, Charles Baxter (1947-) taught grade school in Pinconning, Michigan—an experience which, no doubt inspired the short story "Gryphon," which deals with a substitute teacher visiting a fourth grade class in a rural community in Michigan. Baxter has written in various genres, from novels to poems, but remains best known for his short stories, praised for the skillful manner in which the characters seem real and warranting of our genuine compassion.
