HELP: How do I use my word-processor's command to set margins?

  1. Locate your word processor's command for setting margins. Usually you can find it by looking up the word "margin" in the program's documentation or the online HELP menu.
  2. One you have found the margin feature, follow its directions for setting up margins.
  3. Choose margins consistent with the formatting style you are using in the paper (MLA, APA, CMS, or CBE); see Chapter13.

The graphics below illustrate how to set margins in MS Word 2000.

To format a document's margins, go to the FILE Menu and click on PAGE SETUP.

FILE Menu PAGE SETUP

When you click on PAGE SETUP a text box will appear with several options to choose from. One option is to change the margins of your document. Click on the first tab that says "Margins" and you will be able to change the margins for the top, bottom, left, and right of the document. You can apply this change to your whole document, or just to part of it. You can also adjust the margins of headers of footers. A graphic in the text box will show you how your document will look when you make the changes. You will need to click on OK to lock in the changes. These margins will apply to the entire paper unless you change them.
