3.12 (p.64) Step-by-step instructions for outline formatting.

1. To switch from NORMAL view to OUTLINE mode, go to the VIEW menu and click on OUTLINE.

2. Once you’ve clicked on OUTLINE, your screen will reconfigure the toolbars and layout. Paragraph formatting doesn't appear. Also, the ruler and the paragraph formatting commands are not available. (You can apply styles, although you might not be able to see all the style formatting.) To view or modify paragraph formatting, switch to another view.

3. Type in each heading and press ENTER. Word formats the headings with the built-in heading style Heading 1.
4. If you decide you want to change the order of your headings, and move an upper heading to a lower level, or in other words, demote a heading, highlight the heading and press the DOWN ARROW on the toolbar. The graphic below illustrates moving "Benefits of the Requirement" down.

5. Likewise, if you decide you want to change the order of your headings, and move a lower heading to a higher level, or in other words, promote a heading, highlight the heading and press the UP ARROW on the toolbar. The graphic below illustrates moving "Universities that have a Service Learning Requirement" and "Examples of Service Learning Courses" up.

6. When you're satisfied with the organization, from the VIEW menu switch back to NORMAL view.

7. Once you’re in NORMAL view you can add detailed body text. Make sure you SAVE your document before closing it.
