Using TakeNote! software (p. 190)

1. Open the bibliography software.

For this example, we will use the bibliography software TakeNote! from Academix software. TakeNote! helps researchers to take notes, to outline, and to construct bibliographies for their research papers. Once TakeNote! is loaded, the following opening screen appears:

2. Follow the directions for entering data; usually you will be asked to enter information by category (author, title, publication data).

Notice in the screen below that you are given a dialogue box in which to select the type of publication. In the example we have used, the source is a book with an editor. Other choices include everything from a Web site to an article in a newspaper. Once you have selected the source type, the TakeNote! screen will prompt you to include the correct information needed for that particular type of citation.

3. Wait for the bibliography program to generate your bibliography, based on the information you provide. It will format the information appropriately for a particular documentation style and place it in alphabetical order.

In the screen illustration above, notice that the bibliography has been formatted in MLA style. It can also be converted to other styles (APA, CBE, and CMS) by selecting the appropriate style in the selection box, as shown in the image below.

TakeNote! does quite a good job of formatting the bibliography according to the chosen style, except that it doesn't recognize lower and upper-case letters and it may be missing information if the original style did not call for that information. Styles vary as to their capitalization of words within titles, so, even though it will make the conversion for you, it is still up to you to check all of the punctuation and capitalization in your bibliography.

4. Name and save your bibliography, as well as any Works Cited lists you may have generated from it.

TakeNote! automatically names and saves your bibliography according to the project name—including your notes taken from your sources. It also generates an outline in which your notes can be included, thus helping you to build a first-draft of your research paper. To save your research project in TakeNote!, use the FILE>SAVE AS menu. To save the project as a word processing file, use FILE>EXPORT. That selection will convert the TakeNote! documents into generic word processing documents that can be opened in any word processing software.

NOTE: You will need to check your bibliography carefully to be certain the program has generated it in the correct format.
