Finding a site's homepage (p. 230)

To locate a site's homepage, you can travel up the URL's directory path.

1. Open your browser and locate the site that interests you.

2. Look at the URL, listed on the LOCATION line of your browser. The graphic below illustrates the URL for a page about Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man.

3. Back your way up the URL by deleting the last section of the address, following the last slash. Hit ENTER to retrieve the new page.

4. Look at the URL of the page you have now located. The new page on this example shows other titles of literary works.

5. Continue backing up in the URL until you read the site's homepage. The homepage for this online editing and proofreading site is shown below.

NOTE: A well-designed Web page contains a link to the site's homepage. The above site shows the HOME button on the left-hand side on the top of every page.
