Myths and excuses about plagiarism exposed (p. 263)

The Plagiarism tutorial prepared by Professor Sherman Dorn, from the University of South Florida, has created a Web site with a list of resources about plagiarism, including information about who in the “real world” really cares about plagiarism.

If you go to the first link, “Who Cares,” Dorn addresses some common student concerns regarding plagiarism, such as:

  • No one in the real (or business) world cares about plagiarism.
  • Everyone does it—look at Napster.
  • Famous, great people have plagiarized—like Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • I’m from a different country (or culture).
  • I’ve always written papers like this, and no teacher has ever complained.
  • Why get so huffy? This is only a draft!

Dorn clearly explains the importance of avoiding plagiarism and he also provides links to style sheets so that documentation guidelines are readily available.
