Summary

Native tribes inhabited the Americas for at least 14,000 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and in that time they evolved into remarkably diverse political and social organizations. This chapter discusses many of these Indian groups as well as the catastrophic effect that European contact had on native peoples. Also surveyed is how political and military conflicts in Europe influenced the process of colonization.
