Summary

By the beginning of the 1850s, many of the political, economic, and social forces that had been percolating in American life rose to the surface. As tensions increased, slavery once again assumed center stage in the national drama. This chapter surveys the major events along the road to secession while contextualizing those events against the broader national back-drop.
