Summary

As industrialization, urbanization, and massive waves of immigration transformed the American landscape, racial, ethnic, and class tensions erupted. Nascent labor unions battled capital and angry farmers challenged the dominant political apparatus across the country. Just when many Americans believed we were on the brink of class-oriented civil strife, reform voices began to make themselves heard above the din.
