During the 1890s, the United States plunged into economic depression. The ensuing crisis exacerbated class tensions and sparked significant labor/capital strife. In this period, Americas internal frontier closed, while at the same moment the US began looking internationally for new markets. The war with Spain in 1898 not only provided access to those markets but also sparked debate over the taking of empire.
