After decades of internal strife, Americans responded with a prolonged period of reform. The Progressive era was distinguished by the myriad responses to the processes of industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. The Progressives eschewed revolutionary change in favor of the application of scientific and managerial expertise to make capitalism more humane. At the same time, the Federal sphere of influence expanded dramatically.
