Summary

After maintaining a steadfast isolationism towards European conflicts throughout its history, the United States found itself drawn into the so-called "Great War." World War I required an unprecedented mobilization of national resources as the federal government virtually assumed control of the economy. As a major catalyst for the Allied victory, the United States and President Woodrow Wilson suddenly had enhanced international prestige. Regardless, Wilson was unable to convince a skeptical Congress to support his postwar vision.
