Summary

In the wake of the Progressive period of reform and the travails of world war, America entered a period of retrenchment. Government allied itself with business interests and many segments of American life rebelled against all things modern. At the same time, America’s consumer culture was paramount. Urban culture and mass culture grew in tandem.
