The American intervention in Vietnam touched off a wave of rebellion and resistance at home. The Youth Movement rejected the materialism of American life and the policies of their government. In the wake of the Kennedy assassination, Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty but American liberalism was waning. The New Right began to organize their challenge to the American power structure.
