Editing for Clarity

Efficient writing has one meaning only, allows for one interpretation. The first requirement of efficient writing, then, is clarity.

The following suggestions will help you edit for clarity.

  1. Avoid ambiguous phrasing.
  2. Avoid ambiguous pronoun references.
  3. Avoid ambiguous punctuation.
  4. Avoid telegraphic writing.
  5. Avoid ambiguous modifiers.
  6. Unstack the modifying nouns.
  7. Arrange words for coherence and emphasis.
  8. Use active voice often.
  9. Use passive voice selectively.
  10. Avoid overstuffed sentences.
