Student Resources
Welcome to the Companion Website to James Lester's Writing Research Papers,
Eleventh Edition. This site has been designed with you, the writing student,
in mind. It has also been designed to help you better use the book as a resource
for conducting research and writing research papers. How you ultimately use
this site will depend greatly upon your writing instructor. She may assign you
to use much of this site in conjunction with the text or she may expect you
to explore and investigate this site on your own as a supplement to your research
and writing. In whichever way you use this site, it will help you navigate through
the process of research and writing in a more effective, and more enjoyable,
way.
In this Companion Website, you will find a corresponding section for each chapter
of the text and within those sections you will find different modules that are
specifically correlated to the contents of the book. But you will also find
resources beyond the book, including exercises and activities to help you negotiate
the research/writing process and a significant number of online writing and
research resources to help you in this process.
The modules vary depending on the chapter and section you are using, but you
will find the following modules at various points on the companion site:
- Highlights
This module introduces you to what can be found in a particular chapter's
Companion Website section. - Activities and Quizzes
The activities ask you to put into practice the ideas and strategies you are
working with in each chapter and section of the companion site. The quizzes
will help you reinforce particularly crucial pieces of information that you
have been working with in each chapter and section, as well. - On the Web
This module contains links to online resources for you, including links to
online writing centers, research resources, and activity sites.
- Evaluation Strategies and Cautions
While the Web is full of amazing information that can help you conduct successful
research, so it is full of information that is suspect in nature. These tips
and techniques will help you navigate the Web in a more effective manner.
- Sample Searches
To better illustrate how you can use the World Wide Web for research, this
module takes you step-by-step through sample searches using search engines,
online libraries and archives, and other information databases.
- Student Samples
Here you will find examples from other writing students. The work here represents
a range of types of writing, including basic introductions and sophisticated
electronic writing projects.
